There will be $30,000 worth of prizes given to the top participants. Potthoff said there are also door prizes for those who attend. Tickets are $10 and will be available at the door. “When you bring 100 people here, you’re investing all of that money back into the community,” Potthoff said. He said that through a study they did, the Opera House generate $19.71 per person over the cost of their ticket when they come to a show at the Opera House. Getting exposure of our community and using the Opera House or arts/culture/entertainment as that vehicle is always what I’ve looked at as the opportunity that we have to help enhance our community,” Potthoff said. There’s en economic impact to it and the chance they’ll come back with a boat in the summer or go to the pond hockey tournament or whatever it may be. They’ll be eating at our restaurants and staying in our hotels. “Not only are people coming to the Opera House, but Fairmont. That’s a big deal for us,” Potthoff said.Īs a board member of both the Fairmont Area Chamber of Commerce and Visit Fairmont, Potthoff said he always thinks about the impact on Fairmont and the greater community. They get an authentic opera house experience. “We’ve got people from all over the state coming into the facility to see what the building is and sing on our stage. Potthoff pointed out that there are a lot of benefits to having the competition be held here, not just for the Opera House, but for the greater community. He added that while the news was a surprise to him, he thinks part of the reason it was selected is because, as the oldest operating theater in the state of Minnesota, having the Fairmont Opera House be the site of it made sense for the 10th anniversary. ![]() I was super excited about it and dove into the planning process,” Potthoff said. “I thought they would go north this year because they usually go back and forth… but he called me early this year and asked we could host it. Potthoff said that the competition is moved around the state each year and that he had been in conversation with a lead volunteer of the competition and had mentioned that he’d like the Fairmont Opera House to host it sometime. Those who qualified locally participated at the statewide competition, which was held last year in New Ulm. Last summer was the first time The Fairmont Opera House was part of the Minnesota Sings competition. All of them competed at and qualified at the Martin County Sings competition which was sponsored by The Fairmont Opera House and held this summer at the Martin County Fair. They are Braelyn Faber, Ryan Faber and Ryelynn Forsberg. There are even three Martin County participants in the competition.
